GRASSHOPPER SPARROW

The Grasshopper Sparrow is an uncommon breeder in the CW Region and fairly common farther south. Updated BCN trends show a very significant decrease in the CW Region. This once fairly common species may soon fall below Henslow's Sparrows in numbers. This species can often be found in moderate to dry grasslands. Interestingly, they breed in high concentrations on landfill hills which are not well monitored by the BCN Survey. Threats from summer mowing are high in those locations and nesting attempts may often be unsuccessful. Photo: © Heather Secker
