____ DUPAGE COUNTY ______________________________________
On January 8th at the Morton Arboretum, a group of at least six COMMON
REDPOLLS and six or seven EASTERN BLUEBIRDS were seen in the crabapple
trees ("flowering trees collection") on the west side of the Arboretum,
on your left after you cross the river (entering the west side). The
birds did not stay for long and flew off towards the east / north-east.
Other good locations to check include the tamaracks north of Sunfish
Pond and south of the night exit road and the trees and private feeders
north of the night exit road. Other highlights include SHARP-SHINNED
HAWK, PINE SISKIN, and EASTERN SCREECH-OWL.
At Elsen's Hill as many as 50 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS continue to be
seen in various locations at the preserve. The large flock of at least
150 AMERICAN ROBINS continues to be seen in various areas along the
river and at the far west end of the preserve, but the Varied Thrush
has NOT been relocated since last Tuesday.
At Greene Valley on January 7th, birds seen near the landfill include
eight RED-TAILED HAWKS, two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a NORTHERN HARRIER, and
AMERICAN KESTRELS. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also seen briefly flying over
the field.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in the Yard in Downer's Grove on January
5th.
____ KANE COUNTY ______________________________________
A NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD has been seen for a couple days at SEBA Park in
South Elgin. It was still present on January 8th on the river side of
the bike trail near the baseball diamonds. SEBA park is located off of
Route 31 in South Elgin. Turn east on Plum St. or Middle St. (just
south of the State Street bridge) and look for the parking area at the
end of the road.
On January 7th, three AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS and a MUTE SWAN were seen at
Fabyan F.P., one AMERICAN BLACK DUCK and three GADWALL were seen at
Glenwood Park, two AMERICAN WIGEONS were seen near Blackhawk F.P. A
YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was also seen at Fabyan F.P. on January 7th.
HORNED LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and SNOW BUNTINGS are being reported
from multiple locations in western Kane County.

Saturday, January 15, 2005, 9:00 a.m. Starved Rock Dam (LaSalle Co.)
Our target birds for this trip will be Bald Eagles, Gulls, and
waterfowl if conditions are right. If time permits, a drive around the
back roads looking for field birds (Snow Buntings, Longspurs) and maybe
Snowy Owl and Gyrfalcon (we can hope, can't we?). We will meet at the
Illinois Waterways Visitor Center at the lock and dam. Take I-80 west
and exit at Utica (exit 178) south. Go through town to Dee Bennett Rd
(just before the River) and turn left or east (check the fields for
Wild Turkeys as you're driving) and continue to the visitor center
which will be on your right. Bring your scope and walkie-talkies if you
