__SUMMARY_____________________________________________________
It's been two weeks since the last update. We were on vacation last week, and subsequently yours truly was sick. But it was almost worth it. We got our life Red-cockaded Woodpecker while in Florida thanks to club member Dick Blewett.
Since the last update, spring has sprung. Arrivals include lots of ducks, ROBINS, FOX SPARROWS, WOODCOCKS, SANDHILL CRANES, MEADOWLARKS, KILLDEER, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS, COWBIRDS, and GRACKLES.
__DUPAGE COUNTY_______________________________________________
A WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL was seen on Hemlock Hill at the Arboretum on Saturday. PINE SISKINS, REDHEADS, and BLUEBIRDS were found at the Arb last weekend.
On Monday night, WOODCOCKS were found at Pratt's Wayne north of the Prairie Path and west of Powis Road.
At least one WOODCOCK was at Greene Valley on Tuesday evening.
At least three WOODCOCKS were found at the north end of Warrenville Grove along the Prairie Path, across Route 56 from Blackwell this week.
Lots of ducks were seen at McKee Marsh last week including many BLACK DUCKS, WOOD DUCKS, GADWALL, PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, WIGEON and RING-NECKED DUCK. A RUDDY DUCK was on Silver Lake at Blackwell.
At Willowbrook Wildlife Center, a CAROLINA WREN was heard just south of the small pond along the trail on Sunday. A WHITE- THROATED SPARROW and 11 PURPLE FINCHES were found, along with the wren, last Friday.
Probable WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from a yard in Wheaton on the 16th and 17th.
A RED-BREASTED MERGANSER was on Mallard Lake on Saturday.
__KANE COUNTY_________________________________________________
REDHEADS, LESSER SCAUP, a TUNDRA SWAN and WOODCOCK were found in St. Charles last Friday.
A SHRIKE was at Nelson Lake Marsh last week.
__FERMILAB____________________________________________________
The BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were still present at the Buffalo Feeders on Friday along with HORNED LARKS and WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. A RUSTY BLACKBIRD was seen last Saturday at the Buffalo Feeders.
COMMON MERGENSERS were, well, common at Fermilab's lakes on Friday.
Last Sunday, ducks at the lab included GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, GADWALL, BLACK DUCK, early BLUE-WINGED TEAL, SHOVELER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, CANVASBACK, RING-NECKED DUCK, LESSER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, GOLDENEYE, HOODED and COMMON MERGANSER, and RUDDY DUCK. Additional birds, seen last week include SNOW GOOSE, WIGEON, PINTAIL, REDHEAD and COOT. A SHRIKE was still inside the ring last week.
A MOCKINGBIRD made a brief visit to The Yard in Downers Grove last week.
Thank you to everyone who called or emailed reports this week.
__COMING EVENTS_______________________________________________
Upcoming Field Trips
On Saturday, March 25, 2000 at 8:00am, Peter Kasper will lead us on a trip to his favorite waterfowl site in DuPage County. Meet at the Red Barn just south of the first stop sign west of the Batavia Rd. entrance at 8:00 am. Peter can be reached at (630) 879-0837 or kasper@FNAL.gov.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on March 9th. This will be our annual auction. On a personal note, this is generally my favorite meeting of the year.
The meeting location is Faith Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. The auction begins at 7pm. Get there early if you want to contribute or check out what's available. To get to the meeting, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will see the church on the east side of the street. The parking lot and entrance are in the rear. The meeting is in the church hall on the lower level.
