This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 10:00pm
__SUMMARY_____________________________________________________
Kane and other western counties saw a lot of birding activity in the last week or so. The snow cover led people out in search of HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS and, while they were at it, some other interesting birds were found. Many people chased the GOLDEN EAGLE seen in Lee County last weekend and a GYRFALCON and a GOSHAWK were also seen this week.
There are still lots of SHRIKES around. Other interesting birds include a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, SAW-WHET OWL, HERMIT THRUSH, and some early sparrows. The BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS are still at Fermilab and were also seen in Elgin.
__DUPAGE COUNTY_______________________________________________
A PEREGRINE was seen on the 5th at Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve.
On Thursday, a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen sitting on a telephone pole on Cass Ave just north of where Cass ends at Bluff Rd near Waterfall Glen.
A SAW-WHET OWL was found at the Arboretum on Hemlock Hill on the 2nd. It was not relocated. On Thursday, a HERMIT THRUSH was found on the east side near parking lot 9. SWAMP, FIELD and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were found on the west side in the prairie.
A SHRIKE was seen in Woodridge on Wednesday. It was on "old" Murphy Rd. just west of Woodward Rd. It was perched atop a tree near where the road dead-ends.
The WILD TURKEYS (wild?) were seen on Sunday along Herrick Road between Warrenville and Butterfield Roads.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and SHARP-SHINNED HAWK were seen along Munger Road at Pratt's Wayne on Saturday.
__KANE COUNTY_________________________________________________
On the 5th, a large flock of HORNED LARKS, with a couple of SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS was found near the Elburn grain co-op on Meredith Rd. just north of the intersection of Rt. 38 & Meredith Rd. west of Elburn. A GOSHAWK was seen by one party in the same location on Sunday. Also on Sunday, further north along Meredith Rd. was a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. Many SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on Lasher Rd., east and west of Dauberman Road, west of Kaneville. PURPLE FINCHES were at a farmhouse on Scott Rd., east of Dauberman. An EASTERN MEADOWLARK, was on Scott, just east of Rt. 47
A NORTHERN SHRIKE has been seen at the north end of Nelson Lake - the last sighting was on Sunday. SWAMP SPARROWS were also seen along the trail in this area.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was seen at Fermilab on the 3rd south of Batavia Road along Eola Road.
14 BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were still at the Fermilab Buffalo Feeders on Saturday afternoon. The WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS were still there on Friday. __OTHER COUNTIES______________________________________________
The most spectacular sighting of all was a single party sighting of a GYRFALCON in Kendall County. No one else, despite a lot of searching, has relocated this bird. It was perched on a telephone pole and also on the top of nearby trees at 1455 U.S. Hwy 52. This is just west of the intersection of Ridge Rd. and U.S. 52, about five miles west of I-55 and about seven miles east of Rt. 47. (Map coordinate D1 on page 28 of the Delorme Illinois Atlas.)
Thank you to everyone who called or emailed reports this week.
