This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Wednesday, February 2, 2000 at 11:45am
__SUMMARY_____________________________________________________
It's getting to be very shrikey out there. It's not even a full week since the last report, and you almost have to kick them out of the way! However, the best bird, that you should all chase if you have a chance, are the BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS at Fermilab's Buffalo Feeders. You may not get such a good chance for a long time.
SNOW BUNTINGS and LAPLAND LONGSPURS were reported from a couple of locations in Kane County.
__DUPAGE COUNTY_______________________________________________
An adult BALD EAGLE was seen at Blackwell Forest Preserve on the 23rd.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was found at Greene Valley on Saturday. It was seen in the field north of 79th St. just east of the entrance to the campground.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was seen on Thursday and Friday near the yellow farm house on Smith Road between North Avenue and Powis in the St. Charles area. It was seen hunting over the field on the south/east side of Smith Road and also perched on a utility pole.
At the Yard in Downers Grove, the two HERMIT THRUSHES remain as of Monday. Also on Monday, as well as Tuesday, a SHRIKE was seen.
A SHRIKE was seen in "the other yard in Downers Grove" on Sunday.
At least three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were seen at the south end of the DuPage Airport on Saturday.
__KANE COUNTY_________________________________________________
110 SNOW BUNTINGS, along with LAPLAND LONGSPURS and HORNED LARKS were found on Saturday on Main Street just west of where it crosses Interstate 88. There is a berm on the north side of the road, and this huge flock spent more than half the time in the field on the other side, and were therefore frequently hidden from view from the road.
On Monday, along Seavey Rd. west of Deerpath Rd., there were several flocks of HORNED LARKS with a couple of LAPLAND LONGSPURS. There was also a small flock of SAVANNAH SPARROWS near a roadside hedge. Also on Seavey, west of Route 47, there were HORNED LARKS with 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
__FERMILAB____________________________________________________
At the Buffalo Feeders, at least a dozen BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS and some HORNED LARKS were seen on Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Tuesday, the BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were seen again, along with a WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and a young PEREGRINE FALCON.
Another SHRIKE was reported at Fermilab on Sunday near the old cemetery. This is just across from the model airplane field that is along the far west part of Batavia Rd which runs east from Road B just south of where it joins Wilson St.
Another SHRIKE was seen at Fermilab on Saturday, along Batavia Road, across from the Buffalo Wallow.
A MERLIN was seen along Wilson in the northwest section of Fermilab on Monday. Another MERLIN was seen on the southern part of Eola Road on Sunday.
A SNOW GOOSE, RUDDY DUCK and COOT seen on Monday inside the rings at Fermilab. They were still present on Tuesday. A SHRIKE, several COMMON MERGANSERS and COMMON GOLDENEYES were found inside the rings on Tuesday.
Thank you to everyone who called or emailed reports this week.
__COMING EVENTS_______________________________________________
Upcoming Field Trips
On Saturday February 5, 2000 at 7:00 am - The Mississippi River Eagle Trip. This is an all-day trip to witness the gathering of Bald Eagles along the Mississippi River in western Illinois. If there is sufficient interest (call Pat), we can arrange a second meeting place on Rte. 59 near I-88. The leader is Pat Newman who can be reached at (630) 323-4806.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on March 9th. This will be our annual auction.
The meeting location is Faith Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Social time begins at 7:00pm with the program starting at 7:30pm. To get to the meeting, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will see the church on the east side of the street.
