This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Monday, January 10, 2000 at 4:00pm
__SUMMARY_____________________________________________________
Here's an update on birds which are being reported from multiple locations: RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES (at feeders), HARRIERS (in many locations), GREAT BLUE HERONS, COMMON GOLDENEYE (on the Fox River) and ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (in western DuPage and Kane Counties).
We've also got several sites with NORTHERN SHRIKES, and the CROSSBILLS and SAW-WHET OWL continue at the Arb.
Please note that I'm scaling back the this hotline's coverage of counties other than northern Will, DuPage and Kane. With the prospect of many more reports resulting from big years in DuPage and Kane counties, I need to cut back on southern Will, Kendall and DeKalb counties. Obviously, any reports involving really rare birds in these areas will be passed on.
__DUPAGE COUNTY_______________________________________________
At the Arboretum, a YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen in the pines north of parking two on Tuesday. A FOX SPARROW was seen around Visitor Center shrubs on Thursday. The WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen on Monday and Saturday on Hemlock Hill. The SAW-WHET OWL was seen on the east side on Monday, Thursday and Saturday.
At Greene Valley Forest Preserve, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along the west side of Greene Rd. between 75th & 79th Streets on Saturday.
A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was seen at Argonne on Tuesday. While the lab is inaccessible to the public, these hawks are known to be resident in the area, and can be seen from outside the fence in the northwest corner of Waterfall Glen. A good place to check is along dead-end Kearney Road, which branches off the I-55 south Frontage Road, or along Westgate Road.
At Pratt's Wayne, on Saturday, there was a NORTHERN SHRIKE in a field east of Munger Road, between Stearns Road on the north and the railroad tracks on the south. A SWAMP SPARROW was also found at Pratt's Wayne.
Several HORNED LARKS were seen in the field along Smith Road, west of Powis near St. Charles on Saturday. Horned Larks were also seen at DuPage Airport on Saturday.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Springbrook just west of the model airplane field off of Naperville-Plainfield Rd on Saturday.

__COMING EVENTS_______________________________________________
Upcoming Field Trips
On Saturday January 22, 2000 at 9:00 am - The Lake County Gull Trip. This trip offers a good opportunity to find a variety of gulls, waterfowl and perhaps a few good passerines along the north shore of Lake Michigan. The outing will start at Mathon's Restaurant parking lot adjacent to the Waukegan Harbor. From I-94, take the Belvidere Rd exit (Ill. 120) east. Follow this until Sheridan Rd., where you'll turn north (left). Turn right at the McDonald's, and cross the overpass. Make another right turn, and Mathon's Restaurant will be at the bottom of the hill, on your left. Dress warmly, bring a telescope if you have one and, if possible, a loaf or two of bread for chumming the gulls (this will help us to get some good looks). We will likely check out various overlooks on the way north. Depending on our success, we may travel as far as North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor. Please check the hotline several days before for possible changes, as this trip is dependent upon lake ice conditions. The leader is Jonathan Simms who can be reached at (630) 792-0619.
On Saturday February 5, 2000 at 7:00 am - The Mississippi River Eagle Trip. This is an all-day trip to witness the gathering of Bald Eagles along the Mississippi River in western Illinois. We should also be able to find other raptors and waterfowl. We will meet in front of the upper level entrance to Montgomery Wards at the Yorktown Shopping Center (which is at Highland and Butterfield in Lombard). If there is sufficient interest (call Pat), we can arrange a second meeting place on Rte. 59 near I-88. The leader is Pat Newman who can be reached at (630) 323-4806.
Next Meeting
The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on January 13th. There will be a panel discussion on four popular DuPage Birding areas, Fermi Lab, Springbrook Prairie, and Mc Dowell.
The meeting location is Faith Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Social time begins at 7:00pm with the program starting at 7:30pm. To get to the meeting, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will see the church on the east side of the street. The parking lot and entrance are in the rear. The meeting is in the church hall on the lower level.
