This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Friday, February 19,
1999 at 8:45pm
From DuPage County:
The last report I have for the TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE was from last
Saturday. It was reported by one party and seen in the general
area of parking 3, but the bird has ranged over a wide area.
The SAW-WHET OWL continues to be seen on Hemlock Hill at the
Arboretum. The last report that I have is from Monday evening.
If you search for this bird, please be very careful not to
disturb it or the habitat. We give you precise directions
specifically so you should not have to crawl through every bush
on the hill looking for it. Don't be greedy. If you see one,
please don't look for more. From parking 24, go to the trail
that goes east and west through the pine plantation north of the
parking lot. Walk west until you get to the Hemlock/Yew
plantings. Follow the eastern edge down the hill towards the
road. About 2/3 of the way down, look for an opening with a
stump and a couple of fallen logs. Look for white-wash.
At Waterfall Glen, a BALD EAGLE was seen flying overhead on
Sunday. A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was also seen here.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen at Cress Creek Country Club in Naperville
on Sunday.
On Sunday, a GLAUCOUS GULL was seen at Timber Ridge Forest
Preserve in the large pond near the intersection of County Farm
and Geneva Roads. Park in the Prairie Path lot at the NW corner
of that intersection and follow the relatively new spur path
north towards Kline Creek Farm. The glaucous gull was on the
southernmost island.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and a HARRIER were seen on Thursday the 11th
at Greene Valley Forest Preserve.
I have a single report of 3 BROAD WINGED HAWKS that were seen
over Naperville on Sunday near the intersection of Royal St.
George and Ogden Avenue. A SHOVELER was also seen in a nearby
pond.
From Fermilab:
On Tuesday, a RUDDY DUCK was on Casey's pond. SNOW GEESE were
there on Monday and Sunday. 4 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were
found here on Sunday.
2 GREAT BLUE HERONS were at Swenson Road Marsh on Sunday.
At Dusaf Pond, COMMON MERGANSERS and a few HOODED MERGANSERS were
seen on Tuesday.
The HOODED MERGANSERS, RING-NECKED DUCK, and AMERICAN COOT were
still on Swan Lake on Sunday.
From elsewhere
At Shabbona State Park, on Sunday there were 1300 CANADA GEESE,
80 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, 19 SNOW GEESE, 85 MALLARDS, 2
AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, 4 NORTHERN PINTAILS (2 male and 2 female),
5 CANVASBACKS (3 male and 2 female), 35 LESSER SCAUP, 3 GREATER
SCAUP, 5 COMMON GOLDENEYE, 3 male COMMON MERGANSERS, an adult
BALD EAGLE, and 2 HAIRY WOODPECKERS.
Thank you to everyone who called or emailed reports this week.
Thank you for calling the DuPage Birding Club Hotline
