This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Friday, February 20,

1998 at 9:30pm.



RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS are decisively back with the first report

coming from Hidden Lake on Sunday, the 8th.



From Dupage County:



At Four Lakes - a BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON was seen on

Wednesday. On the 13th, a pair of WOOD DUCKS and an immature

GLAUCOUS GULL were seen.



3 LESSER SCAUP were seen on Thursday at the Waterfall Glen Office

Park pond at Lemont Road and I 55.



WOOD DUCKS were reported from Lombard on the 8th.



At McDowell Grove - on the 8th, 2 to 4 PINE SISKINS and at least

one CAROLINA WREN were found.



A TUFTED TITMOUSE along with a few FLICKERS were found at Greene

Valley on the 8th.



A SNOW GOOSE was found on the 13th in Glendale Heights at the

intersection of Schmale and Mill Pond Drive.



On Saturday, at Mallard Lake, a second winter GLAUCOUS GULL was

seen at the landfill, from Discovery Park.



On the 8th, at the Arboretum, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were seen

in the Alders in the Japanese Collection on the east side and in

the spruces nearby. 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS and a possible

REDPOLL were also seen. Another flock of crossbills was seen on

the west side, on Hemlock Hill.



At Pratt's Wayne - On the 9th, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen just

east of the entrance to the Model Airplane Field off Powis Road.

A SNOW GOOSE was also seen on the 9th in the southwest corner of

Powis and Smith Roads. About 20 HORNED LARKS were seen in the

same area. At Brewster Creek Marsh Pond, KILLDEER and four blue-

phase SNOW GEESE were seen on Monday.



At Springbrook Prairie, 3 or 4 FLICKERS, BROWN CREEPERS,

KILLDEER, SONG and SWAMP SPARROWS, COMMON MERGANSERS, GOLDENEYE

and KINGFISHERS were seen on Sunday.



From Fermilab:



A few SNOW GEESE, COMMON MERGANSERS, GOLDENEYES, MALLARDS, BLACK

DUCKS, LESSER SCAUP and CANVASBACKS are being seen at Fermilab.

On the 15th, GADWALL, RING-NECKED DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER and

hundreds of COMMON MERGANSERS were seen on Lake Law.



From Kane County:



At Nelson Lake Marsh - a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on the 8th.

The location was along the main trail near the lake. A couple of

CREEPERS were also seen there. 2 COMMON GRACKLES were seen on

the 14th along with 3 COMMON MERGANSERS, 2 WIGEONS, CREEPERS

and FLICKERS.



From elsewhere



From Nachusa Grasslands, I have a single report of a TUNDRA SWAN

flyover on Tuesday.



Here are directions.



To get to Discovery Park near Mallard Lake, take Schick Road to

Jefferson. Go north a couple of blocks and turn east (right) on

Goddard. Go east on Goddard until you see Discovery Park. Climb

the berm on the north to get a view of the landfill.
