This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Wednesday, February

4, 1998 at 9:00pm



Please note that the field trip to Lake Calumet this weekend is

on February 7, Saturday. Repeat, that trip will be on Saturday.



From Dupage County:



At the Arboretum - On the 24th, YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS were

seen near parking 20, 2 FLICKERS were seen at parking 23 and a

GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET was seen on Hemlock Hill. On the 25th, a

FLICKER was seen near Meadow Lake. A SONG SPARROW was found

along the river.



A PINTAIL was seen behind an apartment complex in Wheaton on

Friday.



A HERMIT THRUSH was seen last week in a yard in Naperville.



At Hidden lake - on the 18th 4 GREEN-WINGED TEAL, 2 BLACK DUCKS,

and 1 vocalizing immature male RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD were found.

The Teal were still there on the 25th. Also on the 25th, a

YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER and a SONG and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW

were seen near the bridge.



At Argonne - the RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was sitting on its favorite

perch along Westgate Road (just barely inside Argonne) on Monday

morning.



A COMMON REDPOLL was seen in a yard in Westmont on Tuesday. A

FLICKER and PINE SISKINS have also been seen there. More

REDPOLLS were seen in a yard near Lemont Road and I-55 on Friday.



At Springbrook Prairie - a GREAT BLUE HERON and a KINGFISHER were

seen on Sunday.



A MUTE SWAN was seen in Barlett last week.



At Mallard Lake - a Kumlein's ICELAND GULL was seen on Saturday.



MONK PARAKEETS are being seen in Addison east of Addison Road

along the powerlines between Fullerton and Armitage.



From Fermilab:



20 HORNED LARKS were seen at the Buffalo Feeders on the 24th.



From Will County:



A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at Lockport Prairie on Saturday. 2 SNIPE

were seen on the 24th. Lockport Prairie is located in Lockport

on Route 53. It is across from Stateville Prison.





From Kane County:



In rural Kane county, west of Elburn a mixed flock of HORNED

LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPURS and SNOW BUNTINGS were found on the

26th. The specific location is Rt. 38 and Merideth Rd. near what

looks like a grain facility, just before RR tracks.

Sunday, February 7 - Search for winter gulls at Lake Calumet -

Meet at O'Brien Lock and Dam at 8am. Call Bob or Karen Fisher at

630-985-2956 if you have any questions. To get to O'Brien Lock

and Dam, take I 94 to the 130th St. east exit. Proceed east on

130th St. past the first stop light and turn right before the

bridge. Follow the road south to O'Brien Lock and Dam. (T-15)

The All Points Bulletin is a listing of birds that have the

potential to be around now and for which we'd particularly like

to hear reports.



Here are directions. The map coordinates given after each

location correspond to the Chicago Tribune Chicagoland Map:



Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is located north of Lisle just south

of the intersection of Route 56 and Route 53. It is on the east

side of Route 53. To get to the location to view the river,

walk north from the parking lot, across the rock bridge to the

high point that overlooks the mudflat and river. (P-7)



The Morton Arboretum is located on Route 53 in Lisle, just north

of I 88. There is a charge for entry. (P-7)



To get to Mallard Lake, which is located near Bloomingdale, take

Gary Avenue north from Army Trail. Turn west on Lawrence. This

will take you to the entrance to Mallard Lake Forest Preserve.

The main parking lot of Springbrook Forest (or Dragon Lake)

Preserve is located in Naperville on Plainfield-Naperville Road

south of 75th Street on the west side of the street. (R-6)



To get to the Buffalo Wallow and Buffalo Field, enter Fermilab

from the west side Pine Street gate and continue for 1.85 miles

until you see a pond just inside the fence on your left. This is

the Buffalo Wallow which is in the Buffalo Field. The Buffalo

Feeders are at the north end of the field.(P-4)
