This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Friday January 16,

1998 at 8:30pm.



From Dupage County:



At the Arboretum - WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be seen.

The last report I have is from Sunday. They were seen at

Hemlock Hill and just east of the Hedge Garden. Earlier in the

week, they were seen around the Four Columns. Also seen at the

Arboretum on Sunday were BROWN CREEPERS, ROBINS and a FLICKER. A

YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER was seen near parking 20a on Thursday

and Sunday. A FIELD SPARROW was found in the same area on

Sunday.



At Hidden Lake - on Sunday, a male PINTAIL, 5 GREEN-WINGED TEAL

and BLACK DUCKS were found. On the 5th, a Krider's RED-TAILED

HAWK was seen.



At Herrick Lake - TURKEY'S were found about half way up Herrick

Road between Warrenville Road and Butterfield Road on Sunday.



At Argonne - a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was reported from near the

west gate of the lab on the 7th. It was seen again on the 13th..



At Springbrook Prairie - SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen west of Book

road by Aero Estates on Saturday.



A COMMON REDPOLL was seen in a yard in Downers Grove on Sunday.



At Greene Valley - a SHORT EARED OWL was seen on Sunday near the

landfill.



At Mallard Lake - on the 5th, a GLAUCOUS and a THAYER'S GULL were

found. A small flock of SNOW BUNTINGS flew over. HORNED LARKS

were present in the park on the west side of the landfill.



From Fermilab:



HORNED LARKS were seen at the Buffalo Feeders on Sunday along

with a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at the far south end of Eola Road. A

HARRIER was also seen on Sunday.



From Will County:



In Lockport - a BALD EAGLE was found on Sunday at the bridge.

Another flew over Lockport Prairie where a NORTHERN SHRIKE was

also found.



GADWALL, COMMON MERGANSERS and GOLDENEYE were found along the Des

Plaines River on Sunday between Lockport and Brandon Lock and

Dam. At the Dam, BUFFLEHEAD were also seen. COOTS and LESSER

SCAUP were found in Lockport.



Sunday, January 25 - Winter Finches at the Arboretum - Meet at

the main parking lot at 8am. Call Joe Suchecki at 630-369-5570

if you have any questions. The Morton Arboretum is located on

Route 53 in Lisle, just north of I 88. There is a charge for

Sunday, February 1 - Birding the Lakefront - Meet at the Magic

Hedge parking area at Montrose Harbor at 8am. Call Kate or Jim

Frazier at 630-406-1535 if you have any questions. To reach the

Magic Hedge, take Lake Shore Drive north to the Montrose Avenue

exit. Turn right and follow this road until it bends left. You

will see a bait shack on your right after this bend. Turn right

on the road by the bait shack. This road will parallel the

harbor. Park where this road bears to the right. Just to your

left at this point you will see the Magic Hedge. (M-14)



Sunday, February 7 - Search for winter gulls at Lake Calumet -

Meet at O'Brien Lock and Dam at 8am. Call Bob or Karen Fisher at

630-985-2956 if you have any questions. To get to O'Brien Lock

and Dam, take I 94 to the 130th St. east exit. Proceed east on

130th St. past the first stop light and turn right before the

bridge. Follow the road south to O'Brien Lock and Dam. (T-15)

The All Points Bulletin is a listing of birds that have the

potential to be around now and for which we'd particularly like

to hear reports.



To get to Greene Valley Forest Preserve, take Route 53 to 75th

St. south of Lisle. Go west on 75th St. to Greene. Go south on

Greene to 79th St. Go west on 79th until you see the sign for

the Youth Camp and Trail-head on your right. Turn left. Follow

the road to the parking lot. (R-7)



Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is located north of Lisle just south

of the intersection of Route 56 and Route 53. It is on the east

side of Route 53. To get to the location to view the river,

walk north from the parking lot, across the rock bridge to the

high point that overlooks the mudflat and river. (P-7)



The Morton Arboretum is located on Route 53 in Lisle, just north

of I 88. There is a charge for entry. (P-7)



To get to Mallard Lake, which is located near Bloomingdale, take

Gary Avenue north from Army Trail. Turn west on Lawrence. This

will take you to the entrance to Mallard Lake Forest Preserve.

The main parking lot of Springbrook Forest (or Dragon Lake)

Preserve is located in Naperville on Plainfield-Naperville Road

south of 75th Street on the west side of the street. (R-6)



To get to the Buffalo Wallow and Buffalo Field, enter Fermilab

from the west side Pine Street gate and continue for 1.85 miles

until you see a pond just inside the fence on your left. This is

the Buffalo Wallow which is in the Buffalo Field. The Buffalo

Feeders are at the north end of the field.(P-4)



To get to Brandon Lock and Dam, take Larkin Road in Joliet (Route

7) south to US Route 6. Go east on Route 6. The reservoir and

locks will be on your right. If you can park on Route 6, scope

the reservoir from the shore. Otherwise, turn right on Brandon

Rd. and park at the lock visitor lot. Instead of going up the

ramp to the lock viewing area, climb the embankment to the north

and scope the reservoir. The distance is slightly shorter than

from Route 6, but you'll have obstructions. The area below the

dam is best seen from the Brandon Road bridge (park along the

road or walk from the lock parking lot). (W-7)



Lockport Prairie is located in Lockport on Route 53. It is

across from Stateville Prison. (U-7)
