From Dupage County:
At the Arboretum - WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue to be seen.
They were first located on the 20th and the last report is from
today. Locations where they have been seen include Hemlock Hill,
the Hedge Garden, the spruces behind the visitor center and the
area around the Four Columns. PINE SISKINS have also been seen.
The Saw-whet Owl has not been relocated. On Thursday, a MERLIN
was seen near parking 20a.
At Hidden Lake - a very cold LEAST SANDPIPER was spotted today
along with GREEN-WINGED TEAL, BLACK DUCK and GADWALL.
From Fermilab:
The traditional annual field trip on Thursday turned up a ROUGH-
LEGGED HAWK at the south end of Eola Road, 3 HARRIERS in the
field southwest of the intersection of Batavia Road and Eola Road
and HORNED LARKS at the Buffalo Feeders. A GREAT BLUE HERON was
in the Canal Area.
From Kane County:
A PHOEBE was seen in Elgin on Tuesday.

Saturday, January 3 - Winter Gulls at Mallard Lake. Meet at 8am.
To get to Mallard Lake, which is located near Bloomingdale, take
Gary Avenue north from Army Trail. Turn west on Lawrence. This
will take you to the entrance to Mallard Lake Forest Preserve.

Sunday, January 11 - A Des Plaines River Bird Search. Meet at
the Menard's parking lot on Route 53 just south of I 55 at
7:30am. Call Urs Geiser at 630-515-1712 if you have any
questions.
Sunday, January 25 - Winter Finches at the Arboretum - Meet at
the main parking lot at 8am. Call Joe Suchecki at 630-369-5570
if you have any questions. The Morton Arboretum is located on
Route 53 in Lisle, just north of I 88. There is a charge for
entry. (P-7)
Sunday, February 1 - Birding the Lakefront - Meet at the Magic
Hedge parking area at Montrose Harbor at 8am. Call Kate or Jim
Frazier at 630-406-1535 if you have any questions. To reach the
Magic Hedge, take Lake Shore Drive north to the Montrose Avenue
exit. Turn right and follow this road until it bends left. You
will see a bait shack on your right after this bend. Turn right
on the road by the bait shack. This road will parallel the
harbor. Park where this road bears to the right. Just to your
left at this point you will see the Magic Hedge. (M-14)
Sunday, February 7 - Search for winter gulls at Lake Calumet -
Meet at O'Brien Lock and Dam at 8am. Call Bob or Karen Fisher at
630-985-2956 if you have any questions. To get to O'Brien Lock
and Dam, take I 94 to the 130th St. east exit. Proceed east on
130th St. past the first stop light and turn right before the
bridge. Follow the road south to O'Brien Lock and Dam. (T-15)
The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on January 8,
1998.

Please note that our meeting location has changed back to Faith
Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn.
To get to the meeting, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in
Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will
see the church on the east side of the street. The parking lot
and entrance are in the rear. The meeting is in the church hall
on the lower level.
Social time starts at 7pm and the meeting will begin at 7:30pm.
