This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Friday, January 26, 1996 at 10pm. The last update was on the 18th.

From DuPage County:

A flock of 22 SNOW BUNTINGS were seen on Saturday morning near the DuPage Airport. They were seen at the intersection of Kress Road and Hawthorne in the ditch by the construction activity. Go north on Kress Road from Route 38 on the west side of West Chicago. Kress Road ends at Hawthorne.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen at Waterfall Glen last weekend in the southeast corner where the gas pipeline crosses the railroad tracks. In the river, COMMON GOLDENEYE and MERGANSERS were found.

Last weekend, a SNOW GOOSE was found in an industrial pond south of Interstate 55, east of Lemont Road.

REDPOLLS are still coming to Denis Kania's feeder in Naperville. If you would like to visit, please call him at 708-961-5364.

A RED-SHOULDERED HAWK is coming to a feeder in Hinsdale along County Line Road between 55th and 57th streets at around 1:15pm every day for the last few days. If you would like more information, call Marie Cruwys at 708-986-0293. Another RED-SHOULDERED has been reported around Waterfall Glen and another has been reported at Eldridge Park in Elmhurst on Saturday and Tuesday. It was across from the sledding hill, perched in a tree next to Salt Creek. Eldridge Park is on Butterfield Rd. and Spring in Elmhurst.

In Woodridge, WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are still coming to a feeder. At that same feeder, a pair of COWBIRDS was seen on Sunday. GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS were found in Woodridge this week.

SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen on Saturday at Dragon Lake (or Springbrook Prairie) Forest Preserve in the field west of Book Road.

From Will County:

SNOW BUNTINGS continue to be seen in Plainfield on Plainfield-Naperville Road South of 127th Street and about 1 mile east of Route 59 near the north entrance to the Lakelands subdivision.

Here is the DuPage Big Year Report.

In the Gold class, the highest 3 counts reported as of this date were 55, 48 and 40.

Please note that there is a change in the field trip for

Sunday, January 28. We will be doing the Chicago lakefront in search of gulls, Oldsquaw, scoters and other unusual ducks. We ARE, however, changing the meeting location. There have been reports of a Harliquin Duck around the Hyde Park area and, you never know, we might find the Snowy Owl at Miegs Field. So we'll meet at Miegs Field at 8AM either in front of or inside or on the observation deck of the terminal building. Look around once you're there. Also, please note that the weather conditions are not auspicious. Most, if not all, of the lakefront is iced over. If you're a gambler, come on down. If nothing else, we'llstop at a Starbucks when we're finished and trade lies. Please listen to the hotline again before you depart for the field trip. If you can carpool, please do so since we'll probably hit some other spots and the fewer cars, the better.

The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on March 14.

The ever-popular DBC annual auction will be held on that date. More details will follow as we approach that date.

Social time starts at 7PM and the meeting convenes at 7:30PM. The location is the Faith Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn.

To get to the meeting at Faith Lutheran Church, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will see the church on the east side of the street. The parking lot and entrance are in the rear. The meeting is in the church hall on the lower level.
