This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotine for Tuesday, January 2, 1996 at 9:15pm. The last update was on the 26th.
From DuPage County:
A very chilled TURKEY VULTURE was found on Saturday morning at Pratt's Wayne Forest Preserve, off of Powis just north of the Prairie Path crossing.
At Fermilab, on the traditional New Year's Day field trip, a COMMON GOLDENEYE and two hooded Mergansers were found on Swan Lake, near the highrise. In addition, a NORTHERN HARRIER and many ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were found all over. SNOW GEESE and HORNED LARKS were in the fields near the Buffalo Feeders. RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS were found at the Buffalo Feeders and at the feeders by the Lederman Education Center.
GRACKLES, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDS and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS are coming to a feeder in Woodridge.
REDPOLLS and SISKINS are coming to a feeder in Burr Ridge. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was also seen here recently.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen along the entrance road to Greene Valley Forest Preserve on Thursday. A large flock of BROWN CREEPERS was found in the Youth Camp area. A FLICKER was seen on Sunday. Along the south edge of the preserve, along Greene Road where it borders the gravel pits, SONG, WHITE-CROWNED and a FOX SPARROW were found along with a KILLDEER.
A ROBIN and BLUEJAY were found at Fisher Field at the Arboretum on Monday. RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES and PINE SISKINS were found near the Thornhill Building and the Outpost.
REDPOLLS and PINE SISKINS are being seen regularly at a feeder in Downers Grove.
Up to 2 dozen REDPOLLS have been coming to Denis Kania's feeder in Naperville since Christmas. If you would like to arrange a visit to see them, call Denis at 708-961-5364
At Hidden Lake, BLACK DUCKS, a RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, a COOT and a KILLDEER were found. SWAMP SPARROWS were found in the cat tails.
On Tuesday, at Mallard Lake, 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, a ROBIN and a HERMIT THRUSH were found.
From Kane County:
On Saturday, at Nelson Lake Marsh, a NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen flying from tree to tree along the main trail between the two benches as you approach the woods. Other birds included several WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, BLUEJAYS and BROWN CREEPERS.
5 MUTE SWANS continue to be seen south of the dam in South Elgin. One was also seen at Blackhawk Forest Preserve further south on Wednesday.
PINE SISKINS were seen at a feeder in Batavia on the 1st.
From Will County:
GADWALL, BLACK DUCK and GOLDENEYE were found below the Brandon Lock and Dam in Joliet yesterday. COMMON MERGANSER, BUFFLEHEAD, SCAUP, GOLDENEYE and RUDDY DUCK were found above it.
A KINGFISHER, SWAMP SPARROWS and 2 CAROLINA WRENS were found at the Lockport Prairie on Friday.
From Cook County:
A YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER is still being seen at a feeder in Bartlett.
Here are some upcoming field trips:
Sunday, January 7. Bird the DesPlaines River between Romeoville and Joliet with Urs Geiser. We will search the bottom woods and the river shores for wintering Great Blue Heron, Belted Kingfisher, Brown Creeper, Rusty Blackbird, Golden-crowned Kinglet, sparrows, woodpeckers, and of course waterfowl. A scope and waterproof shoes are recommended. Meet at 7:30AM in the parking lot of the Menard's hardware store in Bolingbrook (on the east side of Route 53, about two blocks south of I-55) to form car pools. For further information, call Urs Geiser at 708-515-1712.
The next meeting of the DuPage Birding Club will be on January 11th.
Fran Harty, a biologist with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, will present a program on the birds of Joliet Arsenal. Fran is the expert on the birds of the arsenal and has been documenting the species there for a number of years. Fran will also tell us about plans for the arsenal, access to the site, and explain opportunities for helping on the project.
Come to our first meeting in 1996 and learn about this new terrific birding opportunity within an easy drive of DuPage County.
Social time starts at 7PM and the meeting convenes at 7:30PM. The location is the Faith Lutheran Church at 41 N. Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn.
To get to the meeting at Faith Lutheran Church, take Roosevelt Road to Park Boulevard in Glen Ellyn. Go north on Park Boulevard for 2 blocks and you will see the church on the east side of the street. The parking lot and entrance are in the rear. The meeting is in the church hall on the lower level.

To get to the Buffalo Wallow and Buffalo Field, enter Fermilab from the Pine Street gate and continue for 1.85 miles until you see a pond just inside the fence on your left. This is the Buffalo Wallow which is in the Buffalo Field.
To get to the Fermilab feeders at the Lederman Education Center, enter Fermilab from the west side Pine Street gate. Continue for 0.7 miles. You will see the feeders along a parking lot on the south side of the road.
Hidden Lake Forest Preserve is located north of Lisle just south of the intersection of Route 56 and Route 53. It is on the east side of Route 53. To get to the location to view the river, walk north from the parking lot, across the rock bridge to the high point that overlooks the mudflat and river. (P-7)
Blackhawk Forest Preserve is located on Route 31 5.4 miles north of Route 64 in St. Charles. (M-3)
The Morton Arboretum is located on Route 53 in Lisle, just north of I 88. There is a charge for entry. (P-7)
To get to Brandon Lock and Dam, take Larkin Road in Joliet (Route 7) south to US Route 6. Go east on Route 6. The reservoir and locks will be on your right. If you can park on Route 6, scope the reservoir from the shore. Otherwise, turn right on Brandon Rd. and park at the lock visitor lot. Instead of going up the ramp to the lock viewing area, climb the embankment to the north and scope the reservoir. The distance is slightly shorter than from Route 6, but you'll have obstructions. The area below the dam is best seen from the Brandon Road bridge (park along the road or walk from the lock parking lot). (W-7)
Lockport Prairie is located in Lockport on Route 53. It is across from Stateville Prison. (U-7)

To get to Nelson Lake Marsh, go west on Main Street from its intersection with Randall Road in Batavia. After 1.5 miles, turn south on Nelson Lake Road. The parking lot is on your right after 0.2 miles. (P-2)
To get to Mallard Lake, which is located near Bloomingdale, take Gary Avenue north from Army Trail. Turn west on Lawrence. This will take you to the entrance to Mallard Lake Forest Preserve. (M-6)
