Greetings
This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Monday, January 16,
1995 at 10:30pm To make a report, please call 708-406-1535. A
transcript of this report is now being posted on the Internet.
Contents include: new reports, a recap of previous reports,
recaps from neighboring hotlines, the All Points Bulletin and, at
the end, directions.
SHORT-EARED OWLS continue to be seen along Munger Road near
Pratt's Wayne Woods. Three owls were seen last night and, they
were "barking", a behavior that is supposedly infrequently
observed in Illinois. The best place to look is north of Army
Trail road and south of the railroad tracks. The best time is
between 4:30 and 5:00pm. 5 NORTHERN HARRIERS and a EASTERN
MEADOWLARK were also seen on Sunday. And, a COMMON SNIPE was
seen here on Saturday as well. This is an ethics alert. Please
do not stomp around in the woods and fields looking for the owls
or trying to flush them. There have been some reports that this
is happening and this activity is not helpful.
An adult THAYERS GULL and an adult GLAUCOUS GULL were seen near
Greene Valley Forest Preserve today. They were in the quarry
south of the preserve, north of Royce Road and between Route 53
and Greene Road. It was speculated that, because the landfills
at Lake Calumet were not doing business today, these birds might
be refugees that may not continue to be around. If anyone
relocates them, please let me know.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Dragon Lake yesterday. Also, for you
mammal enthusiasts, there is a bull elk being seen here. No,
we're not talking about a vagrant...apparently it is an escapee
from a local collection. The word is that the forest preserve is
going to do something about this, so if you want to say you saw
an elk in the wild in Illinois, here is your chance.
A DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT was seen in the Fox River behind the
Batavia City Hall on January 9.
11 COMMON MERGANSERS were at Blackwell Forest Preserve on Sunday.
A SNOW GOOSE was seen flying with 3 CANADA GEESE just west of
Black Partridge Woods on Monday.
At Fermilab, on Sunday, a NORTHERN PINTAIL was at Swenson Road
Marsh. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen further along Swenson Road.
Also at Fermilab were 4 GREAT BLUE HERONS and a FLICKER.
If you see Swans now, be very careful. If they have a neck band,
they are likely part of the Trumpter Swan release program in
Wisconsin.
Here is a summary of reports from the last tape:
200 COMMON GOLDENEYE,a SNOW GOOSE, a LESSER SCAUP, a WOOD DUCK
and a KINGFISHER were seen along the Fox River on January 10.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen on January 8 in Pratt's Wayne Woods.
Another one was seen at Fermilab.
2 SNOW GEESE and a WOOD DUCK were at FermiLab on January 10.
A WINTER WREN and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were seen at Waterfall
Glen on January 10
A PINE SISKIN was seen in Medinah on January 9.
A COOPERS HAWK was seen in a backyard in Naperville on January 9.
