This is the DuPage Birding Club Hotline for Tuesday, January 10, 1995 at 10pm. To make a report, please call 708-406-1535. A transcript of this report is now being posted on the Internet.

Contents include: new reports, a recap of previous reports, club news, special field trip invitation, the All Points Bulletin and, at the end, directions.

We have several reports of SHORT-EARED OWLS along Munger Road near Pratt's Wayne Woods. The owls (there have been as many as three seen at once) are along the stretch north of Army Trail and south of the railroad tracks. They were seen this afternoon, yesterday and Sunday. 2 NORTHERN HARRIERS were also seen on Monday. Around 4:30pm is a good time to check out this area.

Several birds were seen along the Fox River today including over 200 COMMON GOLDENEYE from South Elgin to Geneva. In St. Charles, a SNOW GOOSE was seen on the river, right in town. Further south, at Fabyan Forest Preserve, a LESSER SCAUP was seen keeping company with the COMMON GOLDENEYE. A WOOD DUCK was also part of the crowd. And, a possible HOODED MERGANSER/COMMON GOLDENEYE hybrid was also seen here.

A KINGFISHER was seen at Fabyan and also in South Elgin.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen Sunday along the Prairie Path in Pratt's Wayne Woods. Another one was seen Sunday along Swenson Road at Fermilab.

2 SNOW GEESE were at Swan Lake at Fermilab on Sunday and a WOOD DUCK was at the Oxidation Pond.

A WINTER WREN and a YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER were seen at Waterfall Glen on Monday.

A PINE SISKIN was seen at a feeder in Medinah on Saturday. So far, this is the only report we have of siskins.

A COOPERS HAWK was seen in a backyard in Naperville on Saturday.

On Sunday, at least 4 HORNED LARKS were seen feeding on a patch of industrial waste-land just south of I-55 in Bolingbrook.

Here is a summary of reports from the last tape:

The following birds were seen in Joliet on January 2: PIED-BILLED GREBE, GADWALL, CANVASBACK, COMMON GOLDENEYE, BUFFLEHEAD, BLACK DUCK, MALLARD, COMMON MERGANSER and AMERICAN COOT.

At the Arboretum on the 1st, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, RED- BREASTED NUTHATCHS and a WHITE-THROATED SPARROW were seen.

2 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a COWBIRD were at Isle a la Cache in Romeoville on January 1.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen in Downers Grove on January 3.

Eileen Bunker asked me to invite you to join her on one of her daily birdwalks. She counts birds Monday through Friday and would welcome anyone who would like to join her. If you would like more information, call Eileen at 708-834-1343. You may have to let it ring a little longer than normal.

The next DuPage Birding Club meeting is on Thursday, January 12, at 7:00pm. We will be celebrating the club's ten-year anniversary. Refreshments will be served during the social time from 7:00 to 7:30pm. Following the celebration events, our Past President and Director Peter Kasper will present a program on The Birds of Australia, mate. The birds range from the Silver Gull to the Kookaburra - from the Scrub Wren to the Emu. The location of the meeting is the Faith Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn.
