Thayer's Gulls are usually seen at lakes or rivers in winter, especially areas with mixed frozen and open water.  FermiLab ais the best location to see this species. They have also been seen at Settler's Hill and along the Fox River in Kane Co.  They are extremely rare in late fall through winter.  The birds pictured above are both adult Thayer's Gulls.  On these bird, note the larger white tips (spots) on the primaries, dark eyes, slightly darker pink legs, and extensive streaking down the sides.  The undersides of the wings are also almost entirely light (not captured in this particular photo)
