Red-shouldered Hawks are often found in fields near mature forests.  Most recent locations are Pratt's Wayne Woods, Waterfall Glen, and Elsen's Hill.  They have also been seen in past years at FermiLab and Hidden Lake. Migrants can be seen in a wider variety of locations.  Nelson Lake is the best spot in Kane County.  Immature birds like the ones pictured above can be difficult to separate from Red-Tailed Hawks.  Note the extensive streaking on the tail, highly patterned back, and the difference in the streaking on the belly (often shows a belly band, but lower down than the belly band on a Red-Tailed Hawk).
