Glaucous Gulls are usually seen at lakes or rivers in winter, especially areas with mixed frozen and open water. FermiLab is the best location to see this species. They have also been seen at Settler's Hill landfill and along the Fox River in Kane County. They are rare in late fall through winter. On the bird pictured above, note the bicolored bill, almost white primaries, large triangular sloped head, overall whitish/light cream color and only faint patterning. In photo four also not the larger size compared to the Herring Gull in front. Iceland Gull also needs to be carefully ruled out because some pale individuals can have a bi-colored bill and very similar appearance to Glaucous Gulls.
