Canada Geese were recently split into two species (Canada Goose and Cackling Goose). The large geese we normally see in the Chicago area will still be called Canada Geese. The small "Richardson's" Geese, also seen in DuPage County, are now part of a separate species called Cackling Geese. Cackling Geese are usually found among flocks of larger Canada Geese. FermiLab is the best location. They have also been seen at McKee Marsh, Nelson Lake Marsh, Morton Arboretum, and along the Fox River. Cackling Geese are Uncommon to rare from late fall through winter and extremely rare in early fall and early spring.
